day eighty-three - the will to change
The world as we know it has changed, and all in a matter of weeks. While there are many people who are living with the consequences of inaction and denial, it’s remarkable how quickly the world has moved on this. Perhaps it’s because the virus doesn’t seem to discriminate very much, and the effects are happening in the short term.
Policy is changing because it is impacting people across the board, not just minorities, or the poor, or future generations. Rich oligarchs are as susceptible as you or I (though they can clearly afford better health care than the vast majority of society). The worlds most powerful nation is being brought to its knees.
Whilst there are massive shifts happening, and both positive and negative impacts will be felt across the global community, it does show one thing; that if there’s political and societal will, things can change. Drastic measures can be made that will shape our future for the better.
Inaction has powerful consequences, but with the will to change comes great possibilities. If only we had the foresight to make decisions that will positively effect future generations, not just ourselves.
When we’re on the other side of this, whatever that future looks like, we need to remember that change - both immediate and drastic, can happen, Be that on the world stage, in our own country or community, right down to our own lives.
