day twenty eight - glaring omission

With so much going on, there was always going to be things I missed out on getting done. Things considered, but put off due to other commitments, or things omitted due to simply not having the brain space available at the time.

One of a list of things that I initially omitted was an Acknowledgement of Country. A simple sign of respect to First Nations people. Some may see it as unnecessary, divisive or just a shallow token measure, but for me, it’s a beautiful and simple way to outwardly show respect, and to demonstrate an understanding of our history, rather than ignorance, or being a tacet denial of history. It’s an imperative step forward for our nation and all its peoples.

To that end, I wrote an Acknowledgement of Country.

I respectfully acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders of this Nation as the traditional custodians of its land and waters. In particular, the Wiradjuri Nation where the Kilt Life Crisis Project is based and the Gandangara Nation where I was born.

I pay my respects to Ancestors and Elders, past, present and emerging.

Kilt Life Crisis is committed to respecting and honouring First Nations peoples’ unique cultural and spiritual relationships to the land, waters and seas and their rich contribution to society.

It is now at the bottom of each and every page on this site.

Simple? Yes. Tokenistic? No.

At the end of the day, doing the right thing, even if it’s delayed, can still be the right thing to do.

Given the statistics on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders mental health (linked in my journal entry for day twenty six), anything positive that can be done in this sphere is just that. Positive.
