day twenty two - what’s he on about?
When I began this year, and through the very minimal planning stage, the idea of a journal or blog wasn’t really a big aspect. I certainly hadn’t considered doing a post everyday. By day two however, I’d set a precedent. Now, it feels like quite a big part of the whole project. It allows me a space in which to start conversations, and with 366 days this year, there will be a lot to talk about.
Sometimes, it may seem like I go off topic. A lot of this is due to discussing some of the causal issues surrounding mental health. To that end, I’ll be writing broadly, on a range of topics, and where possible, linking to studies and reports that show the results and effects on the communities and peoples involved.
Prevention is better than cure - it’s an oft used cliché, but in this case, one that can be quite apt. With my form of depression and anxiety, one of the causes is a chemical imbalance in my brain - not a lot of prevention that can happen in that regard, but there are many situations I’ve been in that have exacerbated that preexisting condition, most of which could have been prevented.
We need to have the courage to speak out about the hard and big issues that affect so many of us.
Creating a society that is kinder, compassionate, empathetic, more helpful, supportive, more responsible, more accountable, less discriminatory, and proactively deals with the myriad of problems that can have a direct effect on peoples mental health, can do nothing but reduce the numbers affected.
