day fourteen - lolly bag

A few days ago, I got a message from one of my mates, Chris, asking if I’d be interested in doing a radio interview. I almost instantly panicked. Having a general fear of public speaking, and being constantly referred to as a a body PREcussionist (which still irks me) at the last interview I did, some 15 years prior, to say I was a little hesitant was a gross understatement.

Chris from Dude Hut Barbers and Two Fingers Whiskey Bar, has been a huge supporter of the project since we first spoke about it several months prior. He gave me a gentle nudge to get the website live, has been sharing posts, and even offered to sit in on the interview wearing a kilt!

It seemed like it was all in motion and far too late to back out.

One of the hosts of “The Lolly Bag” on local community radio 2REM, Melanie, got in touch and asked a few questions, including if I had any musical suggestions. This was a really lovely aspect, as I was able to pick songs that I found calming, happy and were relevant to the project.

Chris arrived to pick me up in his big old Chevy and we headed out.

They opened with a weather report for Glasgow (nice touch) and after hearing the near perfect “Watermark” by The Northern Folk followed by “Black Eyed Dog” by Nick Drake, we started.

I felt grossly underprepared, but found that speaking about depression and the project was far easier than I expected, (and luckily you couldn’t see me shaking on radio).

Other than the lighthearted and seemingly obligatory '“What’s under the kilt” questions (which Chris skilfully dealt with), both Josh and Mel were very respectful of what Kilt Life Crisis was all about, and were right behind the project.

Afterwards, we all donned kilts, and had some photos taken (everyone was very good sports), whilst my phone and socials were being flooded with so many kind messages of love and support. It was incredibly humbling.

I’m unendingly thankful for the opportunity to speak and share this message. Josh, Mel and Chris and the 2REM 107.3FM family were all amazing, and I so gratefully appreciate their support. I look forward to coming back!
