day ninety-nine - brooklyn

From the Aaron Copland and George Gershwin to Buddy Rich and the Beastie Boys, Brooklyn, New York has given the world a lot of joy (not the least being some favourite old Adidas basketball boots I wore to death, which I picked up at the factory outlet in Melbourne for $20 - absolute bargain).

Now, it is at the heart of the COID-19 epidemic and the world has, once again, turned to New York, once again in horror.

How chilling and surreal and it must be there at the moment, and all the while, either knowing that a bottle bronzed, self-professed ‘cheerleader' who is ‘not a doctor’ has been asleep at the wheel whilst the nation is brought to its knees, or being one who keeps ‘drinking the kool-aid’ he spews each time he opens his mouth.

It’s a terrifying thought that this is happening, and worsening - right now. So too, is the thought of being in a third world country or developing nation. One where poverty and cramped living conditions make the concept of isolation merely a pipe dream.

So, whilst it is hard for us here, many of us are not stuck at home - we are safe at home. Whilst we may be going stir crazy and shouting at our computers for suboptimal download speeds, I feel so very lucky to be in this situation, especially considering how many people in the world are not privileged to have the rights we enjoy here.

That said, there are many in this country that can’t isolate, are now even more stuck with an abusive partner, carer or parent, those that are homeless, and those that are pushed to the brink financially, not to mention the abhorrent rise in racism.

If there’s ever been time for kindness, it’s now.
