day forty - ;
semicolon
[ ˌsem.iˈkəʊ.lɒn] noun
The punctuation mark (;) used to indicate a major division in a sentence where a more distinct separation is felt between clauses or items on a list than is indicated by a comma, as between the two clauses of a compound sentence.
Proper punctuation. It’s the difference between a sentence that’s well-written, and a sentence that’s, well, written. A new favourite is the interrobang ‽ (A combination of an exclamation and question mark). I’ll also forever be advocating for the proper naming of the ‘hashtag’. #octothorpe
But the humble semicolon has taken on an additional meaning in recent years. Now it is also a sign of hope for those struggling with depression addiction, self-injury and suicide The semicolon is intended to encourage people to keep going in life.
project semicolon
[ˈprɒdʒɛkt sem.iˈkəʊ.lɒn] noun
Project Semicolon – stylised as Project ; – is an American nonprofit organisation known for its advocacy of mental health wellness and its focus as an anti-suicide initiative. Founded in 2013, the movement's aim is "presenting hope and love to those who are struggling with depression, suicide, addiction, and self-injury".[1] They are known for encouraging people to tattoo the punctuation mark semicolon (;) as a form of solidarity between people dealing with mental illness or the death of someone from suicide.
"A semicolon is used when an author could've chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life,"
Project Semicolon
Often displayed as a tattoo, commonly on the wrist, the semicolon is a brave reminder of a turning point; a time when they made a choice to keep living.
I have huge respect for anyone who has found strength in the face of such adversity; anyone who has found the courage to talk about it, or in this case, have a permanent reminder for all to see of their struggle and their victory. What a powerful way to address the stigma.
