day seven - “Hey maht!”

“Hey maht!

What’s been going on?

Just sending a message checking up, last time we spoke I know you were a bit stressed out and had a lot going on so I hope everything is going well during your favourite time of year

hope family is doing well and your looking after yourself.

Well over due for a beer “

I received this message from an old mate (or ‘maht’ as he likes to say) that I only see occasionally these days. We last spoke relatively briefly when I was under a lot of stress, recovering from injury and felt very much under the pump.

His message came to me several months later completely out of the blue. When I received it, I was feeling pretty low and I couldn’t bring myself to respond at the time.

My lack of response could have easily been taken the wrong way; that I didn’t care or that I couldn’t be bothered. The reality was that whilst I didn’t reply, the message meant the world to me. He doesn’t know it, but reaching out to me was something I really needed at the time.

Sometimes, it’s all to easy to dismiss not getting a reply as a failed attempt to reach out.

Sometimes, it’s exactly what that person needs.
